Customers, products and opening balances can all be imported from a spreadsheet.
Do the cleanup first
This is the part worth doing carefully, because fixing it afterwards means fixing it in two places.
- Merge duplicate customers and settle on one spelling per business name.
- Check units on products, especially where you buy in one unit and sell in another.
- Decide a cut-off date, usually the start of a month.
- Enter opening balances as at that date rather than importing full history.
You do not need years of history inside the new system. You need correct opening balances and clean lists.
Running both for a cycle
Keep your old process running for one full month alongside the new one, then stop it deliberately. Letting it fade out is how two half-maintained systems appear.
